As a last resort, I turn to you, Apple Community. To find my invisible program eating up all that memory, I ran AdwareMedic. I come from linux).Īlso, what the **** is kernel_task doing with 1.40GB of memory? I've never seen a kernel that needs over a GB of RAM. In terminal, ps aux gave me nothing, seeing as everything (but safari) had under 1% RAM, which is obviously not true (yes, everything but safari < 1% RAM, I know my grep (and regex), awk and sort. To hunt for the extra 1 GB, I went to ps. There, I saw this (hopefully it's not too small): I went to Activity monitor to investigate. (also an issue, I will post in a separate thread) MemRegions: 38205 total, 1910M resident, 81M private, 722M shared. Since top says (everything in green is my comment): As I came from a low memory installation of Debian Linux that normally has a max memory usage of 3-4 GB (even when running Intellij IDEA (the greatest memory hog ever) in the background and playing youtube flash videos at the same time), this is already a bad sign. If I run into any weird issues that might result, I will post it here, but so far nothing.Right now, OS X is telling me that it is using 8GB of memory. I use XCode A LOT so maybe error logs or usage logs built up. It looked like simulators for XCode and other XCode related stuff. It did not seem important and all seemed XCode-related. I guess be careful because I am not sure what is in that directory. I then installed XCode directly off of the App Store and it works like a charm. That is half of the memory on my hard drive. I had to go into the Users//Library/ Developer and I deleted that directory, which I guess somehow saved XCode crap even though I deleted the application.

I had about 10GB of free space according to Disk Utility.ĭeleting XCode (I had it prior but had to update it) and other applications brought me to 17-20GB.

Downloading the XCode file and manually installing did not work because I still got the space/memory error. The answers above, such as rm hugefile did not work for me because I guess I had a legit memory issue. I then installed XCode off of the App Store and it worked like a charm. TL DR: Deleting XCode (~7GB) and then the folder Users//Library/Developer (~90GB) freed around 100GB. This is a really irritating update process.

Then it will ask for your Mac password to install additional components.Īll the best. On the first load, it will open a popup, Verifying "Xcode.app". While you copy make sure you have a couple of extra GBs free. After about 10 to 15 mins it will change to, Copying "Xcode" to "Applications". It will first say, Preparing to copy to "Applications". Once you get the Xcode.app file, copy it over to Applications using finder. This process can take well over 1.5 hours to copy and unpack the file. And I could not clear that much space so I had to use an external drive to unpack the downloaded file. Together they take well over 40 GB of space. xip file that needs to be unpacked and to get a Xcode.app file. But even after that, you might not be able to save enough space for downloading and unpacking. Adding to answer of directly downloading the version you want of Xcode from More Downloads for Apple Developers by signing in with your Apple ID.įirst, delete Xcode application and then manually delete as much data as you can of Xcode located at ~/Developers.
